7/8 Days Umbwe route
The Umbwe Route is the most direct (and for that reason also the hardest) route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, through the Southern Glaciers of Kilimanjaro and Western Breach of Kibo.
The route is so hard because there is little time for acclimatization and to get used to the high altitude.
The route is off the beaten track and not very often used.
Umbwe route is known for its beautiful scenery and view of the landscape. Porters will carry all your personal items, equipment and supplies and a cook prepares your meals. During the route we use tents.
For the 7-day route, add an additional acclimatization day at Umbwe Cave Camp on the itinerary below (an extra day between day 2 and day 3). On the extra day you can make a scenic walk through beautiful scenery.
The extra day helps to get used to the high altitude.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport - Moshi Town
Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, meet and greet by your guide, then make a short transfer to Moshi Town (35 minute drive) to the hotel for an overnight. Briefing about the Kilimanjaro climb by your guide. Your Kilimanjaro guide will also check your equipment. Anything missing can be rented the next day.
Accommodation: Sal Salnero Hotel or Similar
Day 2: Moshi Town - Umbwe Gate - Umbwe Cave Camp
Umbwe Gate (1.600m) - Umbwe Cave Camp (2.900m)
Pick up from the hotel in Moshi, do some brief shopping around town before we leave the town and go to Umbwe Gate (1.600m / 5,300ft). Meet your Kilimanjaro team: guide, assistant guide, cook and porters. Start hiking from Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp. Today we walk through a mystic jungle, home to black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey and many exotic bird species. On our way we have our lunch and on arrival in the camp a hot dinner is waiting for you.
Accommodation: Umbwe Cave Camp
Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp
Umbwe Cave Camp (2.900m) - Barranco Camp (3.900m)
After a beautiful sunrise we have a good breakfast. We start climbing from Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp. We leave the mystic jungle and the trees give way to strange big plants, Giant Erica and Giant Heather. After a while we can see the misty forest in a distance and every now and then we get a glimpse of Uhuru Peak. After a good lunch we walk into the moorland zone, with interesting vegetation with giant groundsels and giant lobelias, up to 5 meters high.
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp
Barranco Camp (3.900m) - Karanga Camp (3.900m)
Another beautiful day with stunning panoramas. We start the day with a steep climb of the Barranco Wall. An exhausting experience, but a fantastic reward when we are on top of Barranco Wall, a magnificent view of Uhuru Peak. We now enter the Alpine Dessert Zone. We stop in Karanga Valley, with fantastic views of the glaciers and Mawenzi Peak (the second peak of Kilimanjaro). It is possible to walk around to see more beautiful panoramas in the afternoon.
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Karanga Camp (3.900m) - Barafu Camp (4.600m)
After a good breakfast we start walking uphill again. The temperature grows colder and the landscape is sparser as we reach Barafu Camp. This is the base camp we use for our summit attempt. From this camp we can see both Uhuru Peak and Mawenzi Peak. Very good dinner, before you will have a rest to be ready for the summit attempt.
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Day 6: Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp (4.600m) - Uhuru Peak (5.895m) - Mweka Camp (3.100m)
Your guide wakes you up before midnight and after a hot cup of tea and some biscuits you will start your trekking to the summit! When we reach Stella Point (5.700m / 18,700ft) we see a spectacular sunrise with Uhuru Peak in the background. We take a short rest to enjoy the spectacular view of the sunrise and Kibo Crater. We continue to walk on a relatively flat path, surrounded by beautiful glaciers, to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak (5.895m / 19,340ft). Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your live! After taking photos we start to descend to our base camp, Barafu Camp (2 to 3 hours walk). We reach the camp, where we will have a rest and a good lunch. After lunch we descend the southern slopes of the Mweka route, to Mweka Camp (about 3 to 4 hours). Exhausted, proud and excited we will have a well-deserved dinner and very good sleep.
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi Town
Mweka Camp (3.100m) - Mweka Gate (1.640m)
After a good night sleep we start our final descend to Mweka Gate. We go through the misty and beautiful forest again, all the way to Mweka Gate. The monkeys say goodbye and we realize we are about to end this great experience. After getting our certificates we will celebrate our Kilimanjaro adventure with our guides, cook and porters. We all did a great job! Transfer to your hotel for your much-needed shower and very comfortable bed.
Accommodation: Sal Salnero Hotel or Similar
Day 8: Moshi town/Arusha town – JRO Airport
After short relaxation at your hotel or a walk around town take a transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport to connect with your flight back home or proceed with the second part of your holiday in Tanzania.
End of tour!
