10 days Tanzania Great Wildebeest Migration Crossing Package

9-days-wildbeest-migrations

Traveling Date:  July – October

Come see the magnificent wildebeest migration in Tanzania at discount prices. The months from July through to September see the herds heading north from the western Serengeti into Kenya and the Masai Mara Game Reserve. By July the wildebeest reach their first great obstacle, the Grumeti River. This is the first of the remarkable river crossings to witness and come late July, when the herd head to Kenya’s Lamai Wedge and Mara Triangle, they are again faced with Mara River. The depth of both river crossings makes drowning a high possibility for the wildebeest, and both are filled with hungry crocodiles on standby, ready to take advantage of their distress. The dangerous crossing of the crocodile infested Mara and Grumeti Rivers is a breath-taking spectacle, not to be missed. You will also visit the best of Tanzania’s National Parks: Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro crater, and the famous Serengeti National Park.

Highlights:

Tarangire NP, Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park & Ngorongoro Crater

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrive at  Arusha

Upon your arrival, you will be collected from the airport and transferred to your hotel in the town of Arusha. If you arrive early enough, you will have an opportunity to explore the lodge grounds, take a dip in the swimming pool or partake in any of the offered additional activities available.

Accommodation:        Kibo Palace Hotel or similar

Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire NP

Our tour sets off after breakfast, with the first stop being the town of Arusha for some last minute purchases, before we head off on an exciting safari experience… We will travel towards the Tarangire National Park, where we stop for lunch and afterwards, our first game drive of the safari! Tarangire National Park is well known for its huge elephant population and baobab trees. It forms the centre of the annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3000 elephant, 25,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebra.

Accommodation:               Tarangire Simba Lodge or similar

Day 3: Tarangire NP – Lake Manyara NP

After breakfast today we are heading towards Lake Manyara National Park for full day game drive. The spectacular national park is located at the north-western corner of Lake Manyara, a hallow soda lake, which lies at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment. Lake Manyara covers two thirds of the park. Incredibly, the other third of the park homes a variety of animals, which are supported by open savannah grassland with rocky outcrops, marshes and acacia woodland. Manyara NP is not only known for its large flocks of flamingos, but also for the elusive tree climbing lions. Other animal found here are buffalo, zebra, hippo, leopard, elephants and giraffes.

Accommodation:               Karatu Simba Lodge or similar

Day 4: Lake Manyara NP – Serengeti NP

Our journey starts shortly after breakfast with a scenic drive up the Rift Valley escarpment to Serengeti National Park. You will be crossing Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority and we make a brief stop at Olduvai Gorge and the museum (Option) which documents the discovery of 1.8 million year old human-like fossils. Thereafter we head for the Serengeti National Park, game drive along the way to the lodge.

Accommodation:               Kenzan Central Tented Camp or similar

Day 5:  Central Serengeti NP – Northern Serengeti NP

An early start sees us heading out after breakfast driving to the Northern Serengeti for game drive in this area until sunset. With a picnic lunch provided, we will go ahead with game drives throughout the afternoon in the endless plains spotting many animals and truly realizing just why this National Park is so famous.  In the late afternoon we drive to the lodge for an overnight.

Accommodation:               Kenzan Mara Tented Camp or similar

Day 6:  Northern Serengeti NP    (Mara River)

After breakfast, we’ll start our game drive around the Lobo area, searching around the kopjes looking for carnivores and the large migration groups that will be preparing to cross the Mara River into Kenya.

The Lobo Hills are covered in large acacia trees which support large amounts of elephants, giraffes, antelopes, buffaloes, and the carnivores that prey upon them. It’s a fascinating opportunity to see a large number of Africa’s most iconic animals in a relatively small amount of time.

From here we’ll proceed to the Bologonja and Kogatende areas where we will eventually meet the Mara River itself. Home to large numbers of hippos and Nile crocodiles, the Mara River is the last major obstacle standing between the Wildebeest Migration and the relative safety of the Maasai Mara. If you’re patient and a little lucky, you may even get to witness the death-defying crossing itself where wildebeest and zebras brave the river’s currents and crocodiles in an attempt to reach safety on the opposite bank.

Dinner and overnight in the heart of the Serengeti National Park according to the standard and the type of accommodation requested from our options.

Accommodation:               Kenzan Mara Tented Camp or similar

We’ll start our day immediately after breakfast, driving through the plains of Togoro and the Mbuzi Mawe kopjes on our way to cross the Banagi River into the Seronera region of the Central Serengeti. Along the way, you’ll spot everything from the enigmatic dik-diks to towering elephants, and everything in between.

The Seronera is often known as ‘big cat country’, and its kopjes and acacias provide an excellent opportunity to spot prices of lazy lions, sleek cheetahs out on the hunt, and leopards overseeing everything from their lofty perches.

The region’s hippo pools and wide open spaces provide ample opportunities for game viewing.

Dinner and overnight in the heart of the Serengeti National Park according to the standard and the type of accommodation requested from our options.

Home to over 120 species of mammal including the fabled Big Five, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most sought after safari destinations in the world. It’s a particularly good place to see the endangered black rhinoceros enjoying a lonely meal out on the grass plains, as well as a place to see large numbers of hippopotamus enjoying the cool water.

From the comfort of your open-top vehicle, you’ll be able to observe and photograph some of Africa’s most recognizable faces. The crater is home to a large number of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and hyenas, as well as a large population of wildebeest, zebras, antelope, Cape buffalo, and more. It is truly one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. After the thrills and excitement of the day, you will have a picnic lunch by the park’s famous hippo pool before drive to Manyara for overnight.
